Trekking at the Cinque Terre between the Sky and the Sea

3 Days/2 Nights

Day 1: From Monterosso to Levanto
In the morning, you will arrive in Monterosso with your own means of transport (bus or train). You will deposit your luggage at the hotel and, early in the afternoon, you will meet the naturalistic guide and transfer to Levanto to start your excursion trekking at the Cinque Terre. While walking to Punta Mesco-Levanto, you will have the possibility to see some of the most picturesque tourist attractions of the Cinque Terre. The path is far less travelled than the other paths along the coast. That is the reason why people who dislike walking in big groups will appreciate trekking at the Cinque Terre along this way. You will also admire the breathtaking headlands of Moneglia, near Sestri Levante. You will arrive in Levanto and take a short walk through the town’s historical centre. Return to Monterosso by train, dinner and overnight stay.

Altitude: about 300 m.
Total walking time: 3 hours (1 hour up to Punta Mesco, then 2 hours to Levanto)

Day 2: The Cinque Terre

After breakfast at the hotel, you will meet the guide and transfer to Riomaggiore by train for another day of trekking at the Cinque Terre. You will start walking along the Blue Trail (il Sentiero Azzurro) that will gradually lead you to explore the Cinque Terre. You will then walk inside the National Park and along the celebrated Lovers’ Way (Via dell’Amore) which leads to Manarola where you will see some interesting geological phenomena. You will continue walking as far as Corniglia and you will have the chance to see the traditional ‘terraces’ that are used for crops. Free Lunch at your personal expense. While walking along this trail towards Vernazza, you will enjoy the amazing views of Guvano beach and very beautiful olive groves. You will then visit Vernazza, an important historical village and the only natural harbour in the Cinque Terre. From Vernazza, you can either walk or take a train to Monterosso al Mare. You will be visiting Monterosso’s beautiful medieval centre. At the end of the tour, you will return to the hotel by coach. Dinner and overnight stay.

Itinerary: Riomaggiore – Monterosso
Altitude: about 700 m.
Total walking time: 6 hours

Day 3: Riomaggiore – Portovenere
After breakfast at the hotel, you will meet the guide and transfer to Riomaggiore by train. That’s where your itinerary Riomaggiore-Telegrafo-Portovenere starts. You will begin from the oldest among the villages in the Cinque Terre, which lies in the narrow valley of ‘Rivus Maior’, a river that is all covered today. The river gave its name to the village and deeply influenced its conformation. You will be walking along the wide trail through the valley of Riomaggiore and the slopes, whose past erosions led to the creation of stunning ‘Terraces’. Your walk will be less tiring, after an initial steep slope and a sharp turn south to reach the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Montenero. The Sanctuary is a splendid viewing platform and stopping place. There, you will enjoy beautiful views of the Cinque Terre coast from Punta Mesco to Portovenere. The trail continues among the oaks behind the sanctuary and leads to two villages called Campiglia and Lemmen. The panorama including the Gulf of La Spezia with the majestic Apuan Alps in the background is visible from any place. From here, a 2 hours’ walk along the trail will lead you to Portovenere. While approaching Portovenere, the trail becomes very steep and ends with a long staircase surrounding the majestic castle and leading to the town centre. You will be walking through the medieval narrow streets of the town or on the road facing the sea, characterised by many old colorful houses that are up to 7 storey high. You will thus get to St. Peter’s, an impressive church which, being built on the twisted rocks of the Arpaia headland, seems to reach out towards the great open sea. Lunch at your expense during the day. Return in the afternoon.

Route 1: Riomaggiore, Telegrafo, Campiglia, Portovenere
Altitude: about Five00 m
Total walking time: 6 hours

Lucca, the Cinque Terre, Portovenere and Lerici

3 Days/2 Nights

Day 1: Lucca
You will arrive in Lucca with your own means of transport. Lunch at your personal expense. In the afternoon, you will meet the tour guide and visit the historical centre of the town that is enclosed within the magnificent 15th-17th century walls. Its transformation into a lovely pedestrian promenade began in the second half of the 19th century. In the old town, there are many fine buildings, towers, bell towers, monumental Renaissance palaces, and impressive urban spaces like the Amphitheatre Square (Piazza dell’Anfiteatro). At the end of the tour, you will travel back to the hotel with your own coach. Accommodation in rooms, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: The Cinque Terre
After breakfast at the hotel, you will transfer to the pier of La Spezia with your own coach. You will meet the guide and begin the streamer trip to the discovery of the famous, enchanting ‘Cinque Terre’. You will be sailing across the Gulf of La Spezia coasting the Palmaria Island and the picturesque village of Portovenere to get to Riomaggiore, the very first village of the ‘Cinque Terre’ for people coming from the East. You will visit its Marina and then walk along the picturesque ‘Lovers’ Way’ (Via dell’Amore) which leads to Manarola. You will continue sailing to Vernazza. While sailing, you will have the chance to see Corniglia, the only town of the ‘Cinque Terre’ that has no direct access to the sea since it is built on top of a headland. Arrival in Vernazza and lunch at your personal expense. After visiting the town‘s medieval centre, the steamer will take you to Monterosso. You will go on a guided tour of its historical centre and enjoy a bit of wine tasting in a typical wine merchant’s. Return to La Spezia by train and then back to the hotel with your own coach. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Portovenere – Lerici

After breakfast at the hotel, your coach will take you to Portovenere where you will meet the guide and start a guided tour of the town, which was included in the UNESCO Humanity Heritage in 1997. Portovenere lies on the southern side of a peninsula which forms the Western part of the Gulf of La Spezia. Its coast is different from the indented coast that is, instead, typical of Eastern Riviera Ligure. At the very end of the peninsula there are three small islands: the Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto. At about 12.30, you will be sailing to Lerici. Lunch at your personal expense. In the afternoon, there will be a guided tour of the magnificent town built in the middle of a small natural bay and overlooked by a majestic castle (that is now a museum) placed on the top of a headland. Nearly in front of Lerici, after passing a place called the ‘Blue Venus’ (la Venere Azzurra), you will be able to admire St. Terenzio village. Return at the end of the tour.

The price includes:

Day 1: Portofino
In the morning, you will arrive in Santa Margherita Ligure and have some free time to go shopping and/or visit the famous town. Lunch at your own personal expense. In the early afternoon, you will meet the tour guide and transfer to Portofino by steamer. The rest of the afternoon will be dedicated to a guided tour of the spectacular village whose surface covers only 2 km. Cars are not allowed. The village has always been called the Little Square (la Piazzetta), which is, to tell the truth, one of the most beautiful in the world. This sort of open-air ‘living room’, in fact, makes the place unique and magic. With a short walk, you will be able to look at the shop-windows of many of the most exclusive ateliers in the world and see the amazing yachts anchored on the pier. The steamer will then take you back to Santa Margherita, from where you will travel back to the hotel with your own means of transport. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Cinque Terre
After breakfast at the hotel, you will reach the steamer in the pier of La Spezia with your own means of transport. You will meet the tour guide and begin the steamer trip to the discovery of the celebrated ‘5 Terre’. You will be sailing across the Gulf of La Spezia coasting the Palmaria Island and the picturesque village of Portovenere to get to Riomaggiore, the very first village of the ‘5 Terre’ for people arriving from the East. You will visit the Marina and then walk along the picturesque ‘Lovers’ Way’ (Via dell’Amore) which leads to Manarola. There you will board the steamer to Vernazza. While sailing, you will have the chance to see Corniglia, the only village of the ‘5 Terre’ which has no direct access to the sea, as it is built on the top of a headland. Arrival in Vernazza. Lunch at your own personal expense. After lunch, you will be visiting the medieval village and then the steamer will take you to Monterosso where you will go on a guided tour of the historical centre and enjoy wine-tasting in a typical wine merchant’s. You will then travel back to La Spezia by train. Departure for the return journey.

In the early afternoon you will be free to transfer to the Palazzo Ducale for entry and a guided tour of the exhibition ‘Van Gogh and Gaugin’s Journey’. The exhibition is centred on the theme of the journey in the works of artists like Van Gogh, Gauguin, Monet, Turner, Hopper, Kandinsky, De Stael. There are about eighty works on display; among them there are 15 drawings, 8 books, 40 paintings and 10 original letters written by Van Gogh, which have never been exhibited in Italy before. At the end of the visit, you will have some free time to walk around Genoa on your own. In the evening, return to the hotel, and then dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Genoa
In the morning, after breakfast at the hotel, you will meet the guide and start a guided tour of Genoa. The city has been the capital of the Republic which has the same name for more than eight centuries. Its port is still the most important in Italy. The town’s landmark is its lighthouse, known as the Lantern (la Lanterna), located near the Old Port area. Free time for lunch at your personal expense and free afternoon. Departure for the return journey.

Cinque Terre, Portovenere and Lerici

2 Days/1 Night

Day 1: The Cinque Terre

A bus will take you to the pier of La Spezia, where you will meet the tour guide, and start the excursion by steamer to the discovery of the celebrated, picturesque ‘5 Terre’. You will be sailing across the Gulf of La Spezia, coast the Palmaria Island and the pictorial Portovenere to get to Riomaggiore, the very first town of the ‘5 Terre’ for people coming from the East. You will visit the Marina and walk along the celebrated ‘Lovers’ Way’(Via dell’Amore) which leads to Manarola. The steamer will then take you to Vernazza. While sailing, you will have the chance to see Corniglia, the only village of the ‘5 Terre’ which has no direct access to the sea, as it is built on the top of a headland. Arrival in Vernazza. Lunch at your own personal expense. After lunch, you will visit the medieval centre and then board the steamer to transfer to Monterosso. There you will go on a guided tour of the historical centre and enjoy wine-tasting in a typical wine merchant’s. Return to La Spezia by train to take the coach back to the hotel. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Portovenere – Lerici

After breakfast at the hotel, your coach will take you to Portovenere where you will meet the tour guide and start a guided tour of the town which was included in the UNESCO Humanity Heitage in 1997. Portovenere is located on the southern side of a peninsula that forms the Western part of the Gulf of La Spezia. Its coast is different from the indented coast that is, instead, typical of Eastern Riviera Ligure. At the very end of the peninsula, there are three small islands: the Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto. At about 12.30, you will be sailing to Lerici by steamer. Lunch at your own personal expense. In the afternoon, there will be a guided tour of the magnificent town built in the middle of a small natural bay, and overlooked by a majestic castle (that is now a museum) placed on the top of a headland. Not far away from Lerici, after passing a place called ‘Blue Venus’ (Venere Azzurra), you will be able to admire the St. Terenzio village. Return journey, at the end of the tour.
